First glimpse of Embracing Rhythms of Work and Rest: From Sabbath
to Sabbatical and Back Again by Ruth Haley Barton

“In order for communities to order their lives around sane rhythms of work and rest, it is essential for respected leaders to live within a sustainable lifestyle themselves and to champion sabbath-keeping as a spiritual practice as significant as Scripture reading, prayer, and confession.

These are leaders who have tried and failed and grown in their capacity to cultivate sane rhythms of work and rest. From their own personal experience, they understand the pitfalls and temptations of attempting something as radical as sabbath-keeping, yet through focus and concerted effort they have made the sabbath the centerpiece of their life in the midst of a culture that knows nothing of the freedom God offers. Thus, when they speak and invite others into this way of life, they do so with the inner authority that comes from having tasted the blessedness of it.”
